چکیده

Experiments were performed to analyze the interaction of an explosively driven shock wave and a propane flame. A 30 g explosive charge was detonated at one end of a 3-m-long, 0.6-m-diameter shock tube to produce a shock wave which propagated into the atmosphere. A propane flame source was positioned at various locations outside of the shock tube to investigate the effect of different strength shock waves. High-speed retroreflective shadowgraph imag ing visualized the shock wave motion and flame response, while a synchronized color camera imaged the flame directly. The explosively driven shock tube was shown to produce a repeatable shock wave and vortex ring. Digital streak images show the shock wave and vortex ring propagation and expansion. The shadowgrams show that the shock wave extinguishes the propane flame by pushing it off of the fuel Communicated by A. Higgins. B M. J. Hargather [email protected] P. M. Interaction of shock tube exhaust flow with a non-pre-mixed flame

Much of the discussion in the public domain relating to shockwave interaction with flames, and the use of high explosives to extinguish, for instance, oil and gas well fires, is anecdotal and outside of scientific literature. The result is a lack of consistent insight into the physical mechanisms involved. It has been proposed by several researchers that the shock waves and the strong vortex ri...

Large eddy simulation of propane combustion in a planar trapped vortex combustor

Propane combustion in a trapped vortex combustor (TVC) is characterized via large eddy simulation coupled with filtered mass density function. A computational algorithm based on high order finite difference (FD) schemes, is employed to solve the Eulerian filtered compressible Navier-Stokes equations. In contrast, a Lagrangian Monte-Carlo solver based on the filtered mass density function is inv...

Mixing Characteristics of Compressible Vortex Rings Interacting with Normal Shock Waves

The instability mechanisms and mixing enhancement arising from the interaction of a compressible vortex ring with a normal shock wave were studied in a colinear, dual-shock tube. This flow geometry simulates features of the interaction of a shock wave with a jet containing streamwise vorticity, a configuration of significant interest for supersonic combustion applications. Flow visualization an...

Optimal Vortex Ring Formation at the Exit of a Shock Tube

Formation of vortex rings at the exit of a shock tube is studied theoretically. A model for predicting the maximum circulation that a vortex ring can attain at the exit of a shock tube is offered. To achieve maximum circulation the initial conditions and the design of the driver and driven sections must be such that the generated shock wave reaches the shock tube exit at least 4Dn/^2 time units...

Shock Wave Interaction with a Flame

Shock wave/fire interactions initiated by high explosives have been historically demonstrated as potentially effective ways to control oil well fires or even forest fires in situations where conventional means cannot be applied. However, the mechanisms by which a fire can be extinguished by a shock wave are not well understood. A series of experiments have been conducted involving a moving shoc...
